Þingvellir National Park
Where continents drift apart and history runs deep — a place of raw geological power and profound cultural significance, recognized by UNESCO since 2004.
About Þingvellir
Þingvellir (Thingvellir) is one of Iceland's most important natural and historical landmarks. The park sits in a dramatic rift valley where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart — a process you can literally see and walk between in the towering rock walls of Almannagjá canyon.
This is also where the Alþingi, the Icelandic national parliament, was established in 930 AD — making it one of the oldest parliaments in the world. For nearly 900 years, chieftains and settlers gathered annually at the Lögberg (Law Rock) to recite laws and settle disputes. The site became a symbol of Icelandic national identity and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
The park covers 9,270 hectares and borders Þingvallavatn, Iceland's largest natural lake. Visitors can explore dramatic fissures, hike along ancient lava fields, marvel at Öxarárfoss waterfall, or even snorkel and dive in the crystal-clear waters of Silfra fissure — one of the world's top dive sites with visibility exceeding 100 meters.
