The Family Behind the Cabin
A passion project born from a love of Iceland's Golden Circle.
Northern Lights Cabin is a family-run holiday rental at Lautarbrekka 7 in Grímsnes, South Iceland. We are 1707 ehf, a small Icelandic company, and we built this cabin to share one of the most beautiful corners of Iceland with travellers from around the world.
The property sits on private land in the heart of the Golden Circle, surrounded by mountains and wide-open skies. On clear winter nights the Aurora Borealis dances directly overhead — no light pollution, no crowds, just you and the Northern Lights.
We designed every detail of the cabin with our guests in mind: comfortable beds, a well-equipped kitchen, fast WiFi for remote workers, a hot tub on the deck for unwinding after a day of exploring, and a separate guesthouse for extra privacy. Whether you are here for the Northern Lights in winter or the midnight sun in summer, we want Northern Lights Cabin to feel like your home in Iceland.
Why We Do This
South Iceland is extraordinary. Within an hour of our front door you can stand at the edge of a 6,500-year-old volcanic crater, watch a geyser erupt, walk behind a 60-metre waterfall, or hike through a geothermal valley of steaming hot springs. The Golden Circle alone draws over a million visitors each year — and our cabin puts you right in the middle of it.
But we noticed that most travellers rush through the Golden Circle in a single day trip from Reykjavík and miss the quieter, deeper experiences: the early-morning silence at Þingvellir before the tour buses arrive, the hidden turquoise waterfall at Brúarfoss, the local horse farms where you can try the famous Icelandic tölt gait, or the secret moss-covered ravine at Nauthúsagil.
We built this website to be more than a booking page. Our place guides, activity pages, and practical tips draw on years of living in and exploring this area. Every distance, every driving direction, and every recommendation comes from personal experience. We want our guests to feel like they have a local friend who knows all the best spots.
That is the heart of Northern Lights Cabin: not just a place to sleep, but a base camp for discovering everything South Iceland has to offer, guided by hosts who genuinely love this landscape and want you to experience it at its best.
What You Will Find
The Main Cabin
The main house is a modern Scandinavian-style cabin with vaulted ceilings, large windows, and natural wood throughout. The open-plan living area has a fully equipped kitchen with a refrigerator, air fryer, microwave, and dining set for eight. The living room has a comfortable sofa and a smart TV. There are two bedrooms — one with a 140×200 cm double bed and one with two 90×200 cm singles that can be pushed together into one large bed. A full bathroom with a walk-in shower completes the main house.
The Guesthouse
Connected to the main house by the shared wooden deck, the guesthouse offers a private sleeping space with a 140×200 cm double bed and its own bathroom with toilet and sink. It is perfect for couples or guests who appreciate a bit of extra privacy and quiet.
The Outdoor Deck
The timber deck bridges the main house and guesthouse and is the social centre of the property. It has a Weber BBQ grill, outdoor furniture with string lights, and — the highlight — a hot tub for three to four people. In winter, soaking in the hot tub under the Northern Lights is an unforgettable experience. In summer, the midnight sun means you can grill and relax outdoors well past midnight.
