Gullfoss Waterfall

Iceland's most iconic waterfall — a thundering two-tiered cascade where the Hvita river plunges 32 meters into a dramatic canyon, creating a breathtaking wall of mist and rainbows.

About Gullfoss

Gullfoss, meaning "Golden Falls," is one of Iceland's most beloved natural wonders and a highlight of the Golden Circle route. The waterfall is fed by the glacial river Hvita, which originates from the Langjokull ice cap, Iceland's second largest glacier.

The waterfall tumbles in two stages: the upper cascade drops 11 meters and the lower plunges an additional 21 meters into a narrow canyon that stretches 2.5 km in length and up to 70 meters deep. On a sunny day, the mist from the falls creates spectacular rainbows arching over the canyon.

Gullfoss was nearly lost to a hydroelectric power scheme in the early 20th century. Sigridur Tomasdottir, daughter of the landowner, fought tirelessly to protect the falls — even threatening to throw herself into the cascade. Her efforts led to Gullfoss being preserved for future generations, and she is celebrated as one of Iceland's first environmentalists.
