Brúarfoss Waterfall
Iceland's bluest waterfall — a mesmerising cascade of vivid turquoise water flowing through ancient lava rock, and a beautiful stop on the Golden Circle, about 45 km from Northern Lights Cabin.
About Brúarfoss
Brúarfoss, meaning "Bridge Falls", is widely regarded as the bluest waterfall in Iceland. The river Brúará cascades over a series of lava rock ledges, and as the water funnels through narrow channels it reveals an extraordinary turquoise colour that seems almost unreal. The vivid blue hue comes from glacial meltwater that has been naturally filtered through underground lava rock, which removes sediment and allows the pure blue wavelengths to shine through.
The waterfall's name refers to a natural stone bridge that once spanned the river at this spot. According to local legend, the bridge was deliberately destroyed in the Middle Ages to prevent people from crossing during a dispute. Although the bridge is long gone, the name lives on — and the waterfall itself has become one of the most sought-after sights on the Golden Circle route.
Unlike many of Iceland's famous waterfalls, Brúarfoss is not about towering height or thundering power. Instead, it captivates with its intimate scale and extraordinary colour. The wide cascade fans out across the dark lava rock, creating an ever-changing pattern of turquoise and white. It is located near Laugarvatn, about 43 minutes' drive from Northern Lights Cabin.
